Jeanie Poole O'Shaughnessy Memorial Lecture

The Jeanie Poole O’Shaughnessy Memorial Lecture was established in 2022 after the death of the Center’s beloved friend and supporter in 2021 and made possible by Patrick O’Shaughnessy and the O’Shaughnessy Family.

This endowed lecture is designed to connect scholarship and education concerning the ideas and institutions of constitutional government with the principles put into practice by the individuals shaping the civic fabric of our country.

In recent years the lecture has been paired with the center’s annual Statesmanship Dinner, an additional opportunity for invited guests to meet and hear from distinguished lecturers in the context of a less formal, audience-driven conversation. In keeping with the center’s tradition of prioritizing time for its students with invited guests, Jeanie Poole O’Shaughnessy Memorial lecturers are also expected to set aside time for an intimate conversation with Tocqueville Fellows over coffee or a shared meal during their time on campus.

Previous featured speakers include South Carolina Senator Tim Scott (2022), Michael Pompeo, the 70th U.S. Secretary of State (2023), and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (2024).

We do that, in part, by introducing them to our nation’s current leaders, especially leading Catholic politicians and civil servants. We are privileged to host guests such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett for the Jeanie Poole O’Shaughnessy Lecture, and look forward to sharing with our students and the broader Notre Dame community their rich perspectives and philosophies about civil leadership.”
