Frederick Douglass is one of the most remarkable and inspiring figures in American history. A former slave, abolitionist, and statesman, he wrote and spoke profoundly on the nature of politics and the plight of enslaved peoples. Moreover, in light of the country's 250th anniversary this year, Douglass is one of the best articulators of the core principles of the Declaration of Independence. Focusing on a selection of Douglass's speeches and writings, this colloquium will explore his thinking on the nature of republican government, slavery, and the American founding.
