This colloquium will explore literature's role in both moral formation and in the political sphere, as well as its role shaping American society since the country's founding. Discussions will raise questions about the importance of fiction; whether it obscures or clarifies truth, particularly when authors write about politics; and whether Americans need to reconsider their relationship with literature today. The colloquium will feature readings from Shakespeare, Plato, John Steinbeck, and Flannery O'Connor, among other authors.
